Is AI Biased?
AI software has become a go-to tool for categorizing content – helping advertisers quickly figure out what content is and isn’t “brand safe.” But these artificial intelligence tools rely on keywords and don’t understand context (at least, not yet). They disproportionately flag content from marginalized podcasters – including Black, Latinx and 2SLGBTQ+ creators – and make it difficult for advertisers to reach these smaller, but highly engaged, niche audiences. And this may be just the tip of the AI iceberg. Angel Livas of the ALIVE Podcast Network has a cautionary tale about the hidden inequities of AI, and the leading-edge work being done to turn things around.
